Toronto Engagement Session – BrickworksNovember 13, 2012

It was a cold and rainy day when we took this engagement photo at The Brickworks in Toronto. But with all the vibrant texture and colour it hardly took away from this unique engagement session. It was great to explore The Brickworks and enjoy a coffee at the Cafe Belong – a really funky cafe with lots of artisan sodas, breads, drinks and a delightful menu.

Jorge and Nadine will be married this weekend at St. Lawrence Hall in Toronto. I can’t wait to see the day unfold!

New Look for Melanie Rebane Wedding PhotographyDecember 29, 2011

Stylish Bridal Clutch purse- Bridesmaids gift

In launching the new brand we have found the perfect gift for clients from Angee W – Elegantly furnished with your engagement or boudoir photography

It’s been a journey over the last few years as my photography studio has evolved. Finally I have sat down with a designer to nail down what my brand is all about. How I want it to feel, to reflect what inspires me and to communicate a bit about my personality.

I love architecture. I studied fine art  and photography, and I have a wanderlust for world travel. I love Paris. I also love interior design. SO, it only seemed fitting that a quatrefoil would provide the cornerstone of the logo – the quatrefoil can be found in both historic architecture and modern design. As with my work I try to bring an old world romanticism, but in a way that is modern, contemporary and artistic. So the quatrefoil it was.

Choosing the colour scheme was a bit of a trick. I had been accustomed to a teal and gold for my colours, but the teal was a little too heavy feeling for me, so I moved to a charcoal and earthy gray.  The charcoal grey represents my down-to-earth personality and my love for  the outdoors.

The gold was a keeper and really the only remaining aspect of the old logo. This colour for me is all about that dash of luxury. The things we choose to  go all out for: The Tiffany Bracelet, the Coach or Michael Kors Purse, The Dress, The Flowers, the full day spa treatment. All these things that transport us out of the everyday and into something truly special. These are the tings wedding days both grand and intimate have in common. There’s always a little splurge.

Like myself, many of my brides relate to my love of travel, style and fashion and down to earth nature. It’s a unique blend and so it needed a little something classic but unique to be the brand that is Melanie Rebane Photography. I sure hope you like it!

Romantic Ottawa Engagement Session – Ottawa Wedding PhotographersOctober 24, 2011

There are fewer things more romantic than an engagement session and the warmth of a chilly fall day with the smell of the fresh cool air. Each engagement session is different, and I knew that this day was going to provide na extraordinary backdrop for our romantic engagement session.

Kaitlin and Corey are to be married in 2012 at Stonefields Heritage Farm, a beautiful and elegant wedding venue so fitting this relaxed and down to earth couple. Kaitlin and Corey wanted to incorporate their new puppy into their engagement shoot, so what better place to go but out to a lake. It was a beautiful afternoon and it was great to get to know this awesome couple and their pooch… (wait til you see this bear of a dog!).

Here’s a sneak peak from their beautiful, romantic and relaxed engagement session.

Thank you Kaitlin and Corey so much for choosing me as your wedding photographer for 2012…I will look forward to seeing some familiar faces at the wedding!

Carp Fair engagement session – Ottawa Wedding PhotographersOctober 4, 2011

Kim and I met first at the wedding show in January when she brought with her a stunning wedding inspiration board. Me with a weakness for all this beautiful, elegant and stylish, fell in love with her vision and was so excited when she and Adam chose me to be their wedding photographer. The fun had only begun. Adam and Kim live in Carp, home of the famous Carp Fair…a special place for them both and one they had visited together many times before. Kim pulled out all the stylish stops from her hair  and make-up right down to her amazing red shoes (debuting in part 2)!

Because they wanted a balance of natural images and  fun romantic images at the fair,  we started our session by the river for some quiet sweet outdoor shots before we hit the fair to partake in fresh squeezed lemonade and enjoyed the magic of the evening lights. Welcome to part 1!

Green Photographer – Ottawa Wedding PhotographerApril 24, 2011

A green photographer? Even though we rarely work in film anymore and mostly work digitally doesn’t mean we don’t leave a carbon footprint. There are many ways to be a greener photographer from the materials that we use, the products that we offer and the way we do our business.

Part of the m photography philosophy, is to bring you a stylish mix of products that are both completely custom while being earth friendly…(I even offer vegan album options…seriously :). Our packaging, brochures and business cards are printed on post consumer recycled paper. While I would love a shiny pretty bag like the one I received from my recent Holt Renfrew purchase, I use stylish paper bags (yes I put the two in the same sentence) and CD cases made of recycled materials and  they easily bio degrade once you are done with them. But I am working on some re-usable packaging ideas…

I used the amazing eneloop rechargeable batteries…and LOTS of them to power my strobes, wireless keyboards and transmitters…(take note photographers…if you are NOT using these amazing batteries…YOU MUST! Not only do these batteries hold their power for twice as long, there are hundreds of batteries not making their way to toxic disposal sites). This is a no-brainer…

Running a green business means that I am mindful of how I use energy – both natural gas and electricity.  We never leave our computers running and have recently switched over to an LED big screen  and monitors here at the studio. In addition, planning my routes to reduce gas usage is another mindful way to both keep expenses down and spare the environment my extra trips around town.

The studio is furnished with many restoration industrial pieces that have been re-purposed as a TV stand, filing cabinet and side table, and our main couch in the meeting area is a lovely piece that we rescued from the curb and had recovered in exquisite and earth friendly Belgian linen – hard to believe the sturdy hardwood frame would have otherwise have been in the landfill.

One of the last things that I like to do to reduce my impact on the environment as both a photographer and business owner is to coordinate all the shipping of my products so that all can be sent in one shipment as opposed to many resulting in fewer trips to the m photography studio for the UPS man. But, even better still, using labs and suppliers as close to home as possible is another great way to be a green photographer…

Whether a photographer or other type of business, there are mindful ways to be as environmental as possible and personally, I think it is important to know how, what we do every day, impacts how we will live tomorrow. And if you are a bride planning your wedding with green options in mind…don’t forget about choosing a green photographer too.

Have more ideas on being a green photographer? I would love to hear more…
